Venice is a city founded in 1925 by the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers, who purchased land in the area and began developing it as a retirement community for railroad employees. Today, Venice is a vibrant city with a rich history and a variety of attractions and activities for visitors to enjoy. In addition to its Venetian Gothic Architecture, Venice is known for its beautiful beaches, including Venice Beach, which features a large shark tooth fossil bed that attracts fossil hunters from around the world. In addition to its beaches, Venice is home to several cultural attractions, including the Venice Theatre and the Venice Art Center.
The city is also home to several parks and nature preserves, including the Myakka River State Park, which offers hiking, camping, and wildlife viewing. Venice High School, located on the Intercoastal earns top spots state-wide, both academically and competitive sports. Venice has a population of approximately 23,000 residents, but it sees over 300,000 visitors each year. The tourism industry supports a variety of businesses in the area, including hotels, restaurants, and retail shops, and most recently a state-of-the-art expansion of Sarasota Memorial Hospital.
